What we are looking for can often be found just looking things in another way.  The couple in this picture is watching a documentary film named “Planet Earth” while there is also beautiful scenery outside their home.  When you forget there is natural beauty around you, you must search for it desperately, wasting your fortune.

We are often unconscious of the fact that what we are looking for is there, in front of us.  As a famous writer once put it, “If you are to hide something precious and wish nobody would ever find it, the best thing you do is to hide it in front of their eyes.”  It is difficult for us to appreciate something too natural like small flowers alongside a street or a crisp breeze in an uncomfortably hot night.  The couple illustrated in this drawing is watching documentary film named Planet Earth, enjoying the picturesque* scenery depicted in it.  They seem relaxed, indulged in the world of the vision conveyed by the media product, while there is bona fide* natural beauty just outside the window.  Like them, we often strive to find even the slightest sign of happiness, sacrificing our precious money we manage to get after days of exhaustion and time we desperately long for.  Although it is easy to forget this fact, happiness does exist.  It can be found anywhere, anytime.  All you have to do to is to keep your eyes open to the world around you.  Accepting happiness we are coveting* is, however, not as simple as picking up a piece of stone on the ground.  From time to time we awkwardly miss the very thing we desire even without realizing it.  If you forget this, you will end up looking at the sun setting on a TV screen.

Nothing remains the same.  This drawing may illustrate the following situation:

  “At last,” the man said, “the film has been completed.”

  “Glad it ended before the construction starts.” the woman said.

  On the screen, the sun – the same sun they had watched thousands of times – was setting between the mountain ridges. 

  The news came to them a few years before that there would be a large shopping complex in their neighborhood, replacing their familiar woods.  Through the window, they could see the same scenery they had seen countless times since their childhood.  

  It was in the same forest they had chased after each other, looking for curious creatures in wild.  It was in the same lake they had learned the coldness of natural water and experienced their first fear of the detachment from the solid ground. 

  “Everything changes.  No wonder this view will be gone.” the man said.

  “Indeed.  And faster than you may realize.”

  That is why he, as a movie director, decided to make this documentary film, which had been completed a few days before.  The scene from their helpless resistance to the changing world was reproducing the unmistakably same view they could see through the window.

  They had almost no choice but to accept the situation.  All they could do was to hope the change would bring something pleasant.  Their baby who was coming to the world wouldn’t see this view.  He would have his own story, as they had theirs. 

“Let’s hope the new place will be a good one.” the woman said cheerfully.

  It cannot be helped, indeed. 

The sun, its eternal glare crystalized on the TV screen, was sinking deep into their memory.
